Subject: Quebec to Ellesmere Port 1951

Hello,

On May 28, 1951 my mother sailed aboard a Manchester Liner from Quebec City. In a diary she kept at the time, she said the captain’s name was Downing (no initials given).

Apparently dock workers were on strike as the captain was ordered to slow the ship’s passage until a temporary settlement could be reached - which came about on June 6th. The ship then docked at Ellesmere Port because it was too heavily laden to navigate the ship canal.

Can you identify which Downing was captain at the time and which Manchester Liner is the one my mother sailed on?

Thanks,
Jack Haworth

Thanks for your quick response, Derrick, and for solving the mystery for me. The photos are great! It looks as though the colour photo might have been taken in the Welland Ship Canal between Lakes Ontario and Erie. Is that possible?

I see that many merchant seamen stay connected through your website. I wonder if any from the Manchester Regiment of 1957 are among them. As a youngster the most important person for me on that journey was the passenger steward – I think he was called George – who cared for the dozen passengers through a very rough crossing. My mother later told me that once we were in the St. Lawrence the captain admitted that it had been the worst crossing of his career.

Thank you very much for adding some welcome details to the picture of a critical chapter in my life.

All the best,

Janet

Hello Janet

The photograph of the Manchester Regiment is taken just above Runcorn on the Manchester Ship Canal .

Manchester Liners ships of this size regularly passed through the Welland Ship Canal in particular the Manchester City (2) and the Manchester Shipper (2) on passage to the Lakehead ports in Lake Superior when they were changed to green and broken white livery to counter the higher temperatures experienced there, so protecting their cargo. Photographs of the Manchester Shipper (2) can found at:

http://www.manchesterliners.co.uk/photoarchive05.htm#shipper2

The photographs by Robert W Walton are taken in the Welland Canal where she is in her traditional livery with a black hull. The one taken alongside the elevator at the Lakehead shows her in her green livery.

Manchester Pioneer

Hi

I have in my possession a Wedgwood plate, depicting the Manchester Pioneer in the St Lawrence Seaway. I am looking to sell it and wondered if you could put it on your web site to see if any of the Manchester Liners members would be interested in it.

Regards

Keith Powell

Anyone interested in purchasing this plate from Mr Powell should contact info@manchesterliners.co.uk and your email will be forwarded to him.

Manchester Liners Football Team

Dear Sirs,

I took a canal boat trip from Castlefield to The Quays in 2011. The on-board commentary made many references to

the Manchester Liners company. This brought many memories back to me. I decided to search the internet and look for information on the company and came across The Old Comrades website.

My father, Eric Blood, was employed by Manchester Liners for many years. Because of my family connection, I was allowed

to play for the Manchester Liners football team in the early 60's. We played in the South Manchester and Wythenshawe League

gaining promotion to the First Division in 1964 and became champions in 1965.

We would meet outside the offices in St Anne's Square on Saturdays and travel to games in the company mini-bus. The team

secretary was Derek Porter and the captain was Bill Rushton. It was sad to read, in the obituaries section, that Bill had passed away in 2009. Also, I have heard recently that another player, Andy Swanwick, had died in 2011.

We trained Tuesdays at Ordsall School and Thursdays at Broughton Modern School. Also, I remember playing at the Ship Canal ground each season, for the Marine Trophy. One year we travelled to London to play against the Furness Withy football team.

I still have in my possession the Manchester Liners News magazines from September 1963, January/February 1964,

September 1965, and June 1967. Also, I have a wall plaque commemorating the opening of the St Lawrence seaway in 1959.

I attach a scanned file photograph of the football team celebrating the winning of the First Division trophy in 1965. The gathering was at the Mersey Hotel on Princess Parkway.

Yours

Harvey Blood

SS Manchester Shipper early 1900's master mariner Arthur Edward Dormer

Dear Sir or Madam,

We are trying to find out some more information regarding Captain Arthur Edward Dormer. He is my wifes's great grandfather, and we believe bthat he was a master mariner on the Manchester Shipper in the early 1900's. Certainly we know from passenger manifests on ancestry.com, that he was investigating a collision which had taken place involving the Manchester Shipper in 1926 in Philadelphia.

It would be marvellous if you have any information regarding his time as a master mariner or earlier. which voyages did he make and when?

I do hope that you are able to help.

regards,

Frank Hives
