I have only just discovered the site and would love to hear more about joining as I have many many happy memories during my time with Manchester Liners. Whether paying crew off whilst traversing the "ditch" or dashing all over from Greenock, to Felixstowe to Rotterdam and even Trieste.I was made redundant in 1981 but was reprieved(?) and worked in DP for a couple of years until being sold as part of a management facilities buy out!

I retired at 55 two years ago after 18 years with the CIS in Miller street. It's great to hear so many names from my past, I hope I'm remembered, if only for joining ships at Irlam locks in the early hours.

Happy days.

I see there are a number of members over here, including one soon to be in Ottawa, and look forward to the next newsletter.

Co-incidently, Jean and I will be over there in May celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary. Unfortunately the dates don't allow joining you in St Annes but I hope there will be other opportunities.

With thanks and best wishes

He sent an e-mail to say as he is getting on in years and lived too far away to get to either of our meetings so he felt it prudent to resign.  We wish him well and hope he will still keep in touch.

Stephen Appleyard is his "contact point" in Manchester.

Peter Cullen says:

Harold was Catering Officer off Manchester Challenge, Concorde and other ships too numerous to mention.
He was my Chief Steward on a number of ships, and believe me in a group he is the life and soul of the party and keeps all amused, very quick with his repartee.   He mentioned he had seen Blake Nelson who had been telling him all about us, and that is what has sparked things off re MLOSA.

Harold was always known as "H" -  to name a few he would remember, Bob Bowen, Tony Rowlands, Ray Camelleri, Pete Frier, Geoff Evans, Mike Hatton, Brian and Bill Sellers, Pat Humphrey,  Jim Illingworth, Bryon Hancock, Pete Moorwood, Eddie Richardson, Rod  Gregson, Brian Redfearn, Bryan Whitby, Derek Porter, Don Corker, John Norcliffe, John Newby, Ernie Moore, Roger Llewellyn and many more.

Spent 9 months seconded to PSNC at end of apprenticeship as punishment for not completing correspondence course studies, enjoyed it marvellously so brought back to ML as soon as I passed 2nd mate's.

3/o on Vigour, Zeal, Concept, Challenge, Crusade, Renown, Reward & Vanguard, promoted 2/o 1978.

Left in 1981 as 2/o as ships were starting to be sold, and joined offshore sector anchor handling and rig moving (rapid promotion as not many stuck it!) left as master in 1990 an came ashore piloting, initially at Lowestoft.

In addition to the above new members we have two honorary members to welcome:

John Slavin from Manchester

John has been offered honorary membership in recognition of the help he has given, and still does give, to our webmaster Derrick Howarth in setting up the photo archive file on the web site.

John has provided the majority of the ship pictures which appear on the web site, for which we are very grateful.

On behalf of the membership I wish him a long and interesting time as a member of our Association.

Russ and Beth Eis from San Diego, U.S.A.

"Rescue of Yacht Desert Princess by Seatrain Trenton"….in Newsletter No 5, pages 8/9 Capt Peter Cullen told of the rescue of Russ and Beth Eis and recovery of their yacht Desert Princess by the Seatrain Trenton on the 21st August 1978.

Over the intervening years Russ & Beth have kept in touch with Peter and are ever grateful for their rescue that day.
They still maintain a great interest in the goings on of MLOSA and so it was thought a nice gesture to make them honorary "associate" members.

Andy wrote in:
I was with ML from Oct 73 to June 81, as Chief Officer, Supercargo, Master and Owners Representative in the Eastern Mediterranean. Not a long time compared to many of your members.
Most of the time since leaving ML, I have spent as master on nuclear cargo ships, including armed vessels on higher security voyages, until leaving in 2004. Initially I then spent a year around the Irish Sea involved in heavy lift, salvage and dredging work and getting a pilot exemption certificate for the Mersey, before deciding to retire.
This was short lived as I was contacted by various colleagues from the past and presently have three jobs:
1) ship traffic control at Liverpool port operations vts,
2) consultancy work for radioactive shipments,
3) carrying out cargo surveys.
I will have to retire again soon as my wife, Diane is getting fed up doing all the work around the house and garden!

Frank Priest joined in December 2006

1962-63 Manchester Progress

Frank saw the website and wrote in:
Manchester Progress in 1962/63. Am I still eligible to join as I was only a deck boy?.
I only did three trips, as the thought of returning to Halifax….it seemed to me to be the coldest place on earth, I couldn’t stop shaking on the foc’sle as we approached the Port. However, I enjoyed my short time with the "Liners", and have always regretted not staying with the vessel. I have quite a bit of memorabilia, including my pay slips, Manchester Liners News from January1963, photographs, including a superb picture of her circa.1960.
The crew and the bosun were very good to me, and taught me a lot. As well as the normal "tasks", I was taught how to steer the ship, and how to operate the steam winches.
I revisited No. 9 Dock with a friend in 1983 and it was so sad to see how the docks had deteriorated. The only people we spoke to were the dock police and the staff at Mode Wheel lock. I then visited Furness House, where I met some very helpful office staff, who gave me a photo of the vessel, and at a later date a copy of the vessel’s original registration certificate with a brief history right until she was broke up by the shipbreaking firm of Brodospas in Split, Yugoslavia in 1966.

Stephen Lyons & Elizabeth joined early January 2007

Joined in 1973 as Junior Engineer – left 1979 as 3rd Engineer on Asian Renown 1975.

Mr James (Jim) & Janet Catlow joined January 2007

Joined 1972 as 4th Engineer – sailed on Courage, Zeal, Renown, Crusade; 1978 last of the Courage as 2nd Eng – then left.

Good day
My name is Jim Catlow I served 6 years with Liners from 1972-1978, having mainly served on the Courage rising from 4th to 2nd Engineer, I ended up on her last voyage and went as guarantee engineer when she was sold to Honk Kong island Shipping Company.
I served with Ray Camilieri Chief Steward; Smudge Smith 2nd Steward; Josh White Chief Engineer; Evil Harry Chief Engineer; A-B Askew, Master; Dia Thomas Master; Barry Hawthorne Personnel; Joe Chief Officer Manchester Renown; George Nansom Eng Super; and the majority of the eng supers etc etc
I remember all the characters of which the industry is so bereft,
I would like to join the association. I am still working in the Industry.
Looking fwd to a meet up with me old ship mates.
Best regards
J Catlow.

Richard & AnnetteSimpson ..joined January 2007

Eng Cadet 75-79, then 5th Engineer until absorbed in to Furness Withy in 82

Richard replied to Peter Cullen:
Captain Pete,
As I had a look through the web site a few days ago I was amazed at the number of names there were around that I recognised. You may be surprised to hear that although I am now nearly 50 years old and the Chief Engineer of a large cruise liner you were the Master when I did my first trip as a cadet on the Manchester Vanguard in 1977. This was the vessels second voyage when she went to Japan and back via the Suez. Do you remember playing deck golf against me? You kept saying "No pressure" as I played my shots and I was terrified of winning!!
As far as I can remember on that trip was Bill Lowe as mate, who I now see is also a member here, Pete Johnson was sparky, and I have just noticed that his wife has now also passed away, Walter Stargeant was Chief, Neil Howard was Second, Henry Stacker was Third, Alan Johns was Fourth and we had six cadets in total, two Engineers and four Deck lads.
Wonderful days that I still remember very fondly and I feel so proud to have been involved with a proper shipping company while we still had them. Of course my association with Manchester Liners goes back even further as, if I remember correctly you knew my father, Ken Simpson, when he was at sea with the company. I know he sailed with the likes of Eddie Weeks and Gus Hannaford who both then looked after me on the cadet scheme from '75 to '79.
Anyway I would love to communicate with some of the members that I have had associations with in the past and hopefully even get to meet some one day.
Once again many thanks for your reply, I look forward to further communications
Best regards
Richard Simpson (In those days Rick the Dip!)

Michael Brown joined in January only days before the Newsletter went to press
